The united methodist church’s highest court has ruled that congregations seeking to leave the denomination over theological differences cannot do so via a church closure.

Since 2019, more than 7,000 congregations have received approval to leave the church. The top court of the united methodist church has closed any paths for member churches to leave the denomination in response to rules passed last year eliminating longstanding bans on lgbtq+.
